On average, humans have 48.6 thoughts per minute. That adds up to 70,000 thoughts per day! The crazy thing is, many of us arenβt even aware of the majority of what we are thinking. We remain completely identified with our minds. It is only when we start to become still, that we begin to notice the incessant chatter taking place in the background of our awareness; narrating and labelling everything we see and do. This is when we start to realise how much of this chatter is negative; judging situations, judging others, and judging ourselves.
If we can understand that our thoughts ultimately lead to the outcomes we experience in life, we can understand how important it is to learn how to foster positive thought patterns.
Iβm sure you have heard of The Law of Attraction. The book βThe Secretβ by Rhonda Byrne made it quite well known, and seemingly easy to access. I read this book years ago now, and while I feel it glamorised the concept, it opened my eyes to a way of thinking, gave me the nudge to learn more, and helped me grow in my spiritual practice.
For those of you who arenβt familiar with The Law of Attraction, it states that like attracts like. So what you think about, believe in and feel intensely about, you will bring about. It teaches us to be grateful and focus on positive thinking, but it is so much more than that.
The Law of Attraction stems from The Law of Vibration.
Through science and quantum physics, we know that everything in the universe is made up of energy. The Law of Vibration states that all energy is constantly vibrating. From you and me, to the tree outside and the chair you are sitting on- we are all simply vibrations of energy. It might look like chair is solid, but put it under a microscope and you will see millions of subatomic particles buzzing around with energy. This goes to show that just because we canβt see it with the naked eye, doesnβt mean it doesnβt exist. It may seem like we are separate from each other, the tree or the chair, but in reality, we are all just a sea of vibrating energy fields; we only seem different because we are vibrating at different frequencies.
Imagination is everything. It is the preview of lifeβs coming attractions.
Albert Einstein
Our thoughts are said to be some of the most powerful vibrations. By the Law of Attraction, we must focus on positive thoughts, feelings, and beliefs to attract positive outcomes into our lives. When we think positive thoughts, we are operating on a high vibrational frequency and drawing more positivity into our lives, and when our minds are filled with negative thinking, we are operating on a lower vibrational frequency which brings more negative outcomes.
We can also say this a different way. what we think about will determine how we will feel, and how we feel will determine how we react or respond to different situations, which will then determine the outcome of our circumstances.
There is a line of thinking that says thoughts always come first, and emotions come second. If you are ever feeling blue, uneasy, anxious, etc. but arenβt sure why, take a minute to look back at what you were thinking about. Most likely it was negative thoughts that you werenβt even aware of. (or PMS)
The more I become aware of my thoughts, the more I realise how negative and fucked up they can be. I'll be having a great day and then all of a sudden I notice a frown on my face and can feel myself being in a shitty mood and I'm like how did I get here?
With social media being so prevalent, being stuck at home, and spending more time on our phones than ever, we are constantly comparing ourselves to others, and it is easy to get stuck in negative thought patterns, such as βIβm not good enoughβ , βIβm not doing enoughβ, βIβll only be happy whenβ¦β
By developing positive thinking habits, we will experience more positive emotions such as excitement and hope. When we feel better, we will react better to life situations, take necessary action towards our goals and will end up with the outcome we want. When we develop positive thinking patterns, we will be able to face and overcome challenges from a place of peace and clarity, allowing us to continue moving forward, no matter what life throws at us.
On the other hand, If we are constantly telling ourselves that we arenβt good enough, negative emotions such as fear and anxiety will arise and cause us to respond sporadically, inappropriately or even worse and more common, will lead us to inaction and not seeing our goals to fruition.
Itβs not as simple as wishing for a million dollars and receiving a cheque in the mail. I believe that if we can learn to be the master of our minds, regulate our thoughts and focus on things that make us feel good, we can achieve anything.
Whatever ambitions you have, something you want to achieve, the person you want to be – if you think about it every day, write it down, look at it, and feel what it will feel like when you achieve it, feel it in your soul, know that it is yours – the steps needed to reach it will present themselves to you. You will be in the best place possible to take action and overcome any obstacles, to learn and grow from them, and continue forward.
So how do we re-train ourselves to develop positive thinking habits? In my last post Take Each Day By the Balls, I talked about the powerful effect of writing out gratitudes and affirmations daily, and how meditation can help us to slow down and become aware of our thoughts.
Before I go to bed I write out the 5 best things about the day, and when I wake up I write out 5 more things I am grateful for, and 5 positive affirmations – as if I already possess the the stated concepts. I also try and meditate for 20 mins each day.
I'm not going to lie and say I do this every single day because the truth is, I'm not perfect. Shocker I know. If I sleep in, am hungover, or am away from home I let my routine slide. I never go longer than a day or 2 without doing these rituals, but I definitely notice a difference in my mood and outlook when I miss them. And the longer I go without meditating, the more difficult it becomes to make my brain shut the fuck up.
By continually focusing on what we have instead of what we donβt have, and truly feeling in our souls that we already have that which we desire, we can develop a positive mindset. This will lead to experiencing more positive emotions, and taking the actionable steps required to reach our desired outcome in life.
Most importantly, it will teach us to be thankful for everything we have, and help us realise how abundant our lives already are.
Itβs not as easy as writing a gratitude list, but writing one doesnβt hurt. Good …

Another excellent article and so relevant during this crazy belch from normal living. Something we must all do on a daily basis even when times are normal (whatever that is). Great to read your blogs. Sometimes we know these things, but we just need someone to say it to remind us. Very well done!
